MERIT AWARDS

NYS Attorney General's Triple C Award

Philo4Thought offers an academic merit award to high-performing college students, graduate students (or college-bound AP students) who has overcome a struggle with a financial, medical or domestic crisis while maintaining a 3.5 G.P.A. or higher.

The “Triple C” Award issued by the New York State Attorney General’s Office for having an inspiring character, courage and commitment (to community service or leadership) in the face of personal adversity and life challenges. The award recognizes their spirit and determination. (AP students and college students are eligible to receive this award, which has been known to improve a student’s chances of getting into his/her first choice program.

Young Professional Features

Young professionals volunteering in service to their community are eligible to be considered as mentors and future leaders for Philo4Thought, which includes a special feature profile on our site and in our quarterly newsletter.

NYS Certificate of Excellence

Philo4Thought collaborates with the Office of New York State Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi to offer a special community service recognition award for outstanding contributions in helping others overcome challenges and adversity.

Categories include: 

  • Outstanding Lifetime Achievements (for seasoned professionals 65+ who have dedicated their lives to the advancement of the Hellenic community)
  • Outstanding Community Outreach (Organization/Initiative/Individual)
  • Outstanding Young Professional Outreach (Organization/Initiative/Individual)
  • Outstanding Global Outreach (Organization/Initiative/Individual)

NOMINATION PROCESS

Annual submission Deadline: (Jan 15th)

  • Award Distribution: All merit awards (including the Philo4Thought Foundation Grant) are presented at Philo4Thought’s annual Spring Symposium. (Visit Events page for dates.)
  • Review Process: Nominations are reviewed on an annual basis (January 15th-February 15th). Honorees’ information will then be sent to the appropriate NYS Office for processing along with a letter from the Chair of Philo4Thought’s Review Committee. Late or incomplete nominations will not be submitted to the committee for review.

For Students (Triple "C" Award)

  • Minimum Requirements: Nominees must be actively enrolled in a high school/college program and recommended by an instructor. 
  • Nominator’s Letter of Recommendation: The instructor or administrator recommending the student should prepare a letter on formal school letterhead. The letter should include a brief explanation about the student’s need and why he/she merits the Triple C Award.
  • Verification of Established Academic Excellence & Community Service: A letter of support from the Principal or AP of Guidance indicating the student’s GPA, community outreach, and active status as a Junior/Senior. (GPA must be 3.5 or higher to qualify.)
  • Under 18 Permission Slip: Students under 18 must include a signed school permission slip for nominee to be photographed/recorded at the award ceremony. Advisors, if your school does not have a standardized form, please email us for a copy of our standardized form. 
  • Nominee Information: (1) The nominee’s full name as it should appear on the certificate, (2) a high-resolution profile photo to be included on our list of honorees, (3) his/her email address, (4) his/her parents’ names, mailing address, phone numbers and emails.
  • Nominee’s Personal Essay: 500-800 words (completed by the student) indicating the personal journey, struggle, character, goals and accomplishments he/she has overcome, an explanation of the academic and professional path he/she wishes to pursue in college and the potential career plan. How will the award help to provide support?

Young Professional Philanthropists & Scholars

Nominate a young professional for recognition and a special feature in our seasonal Newsletter!

  • Nominator’s Letter of Recommendation: The instructor or administrator recommending the student should prepare a letter on formal school letterhead. The letter should include a brief explanation about the student’s need and why he/she merits the Triple C Award.
  • Nominee Information: (1) The nominee’s full name as it should appear on the certificate, (2) a high-resolution profile photo of the nominee, (3) his/her email address, (4) his/her phone number, (5) his/her website (6) his/her LinkedIn profile.

Certificates of Excellence (Community Outreach)

  • Nominator’s Letter of Recommendation: The community sponsor recommending the individual/organization should prepare a letter on formal letterhead providing a brief explanation about the individual/organization and why the person/initiative merits recognition.
  • Nominee Information (individual): (1) The nominee’s full name as it should appear on the certificate, (2) a high-resolution profile photo of the nominee, (3) his/her email address, (4) his/her phone number, (5) his/her website (6) his/her LinkedIn profile.
  • Nominee Information (organization/initiative): (1) The organization’s complete name as it should appear on the certificate, (2) a high-resolution logo, (3) the director’s email address, (4) the director’s phone number, (5) the organization’s website (6) the organization’s LinkedIn page.

ADDITIONAL MERIT AWARDS

Philo4Thought Scholarship (2014-22)

Philo4Thought’s annual scholarship (2014-2022) was based on our commitment to providing assistive support to college students, graduate students and college-bound AP students struggling with a major hardships (financial, medical, domestic, etc.) while excelling at school (minimum cumulative G.P.A., 3.5) and making meaningful contributions to the advancement and preservation of their Community. 

The financial scholarship is being awarded to honor of the memory and legacy of Dr. Nadine Sabbagh, M.D. (mother and inspiration to our Founding CEO, RIP 2021), who was well known for helping individuals in need around the world. Although this initiative will be discontinued due to lack of funding since the pandemic, we have contributed to NHSA and other scholarship funds and will continue to offer the merit awards and to provide outreach opportunities for students seeking funding and scholarships through other organizations in Dr. Sabbagh’s honor.

The merit scholarship is offered in conjunction with the Attorney General’s “Triple C Award” in recognition of a student’s Courage, Character & Commitment to Service despite substantial personal adversity, etc. For the duration of this initiative, the combined scholarship and recognition award, have been known to improve a student’s chances of getting into his/her first choice program while the modest scholarship has helped students cover college fees, book costs, and related training/services (SAT/GRE/etc.).
