HYPLife: Winter Digest 2023

HYPLife

Winter Digest 2023-24

EDITOR'S NOTE

WELCOME BACK!

Dear Readers,

Happy Holidays! Wishing you all the best as we join together to experience this special season of light that beings with it the renewal of hope, reconnection with family and friends, and great new opportunities for networking and collaboration.

We apologize for the delay in publishing the Fall 2023 Issue of HYP Life due to turmoil on the world scene. Many have struggled with a variety of challenges in 2023. At this time, our team urges you, dear readers, to maintain the inner strength that is essential to overcoming any difficult time. Take every opportunity in 2024 to apply the powerful lessons we’ve imparted to you in previous years.

The focus of this season’s newsletter is solidarity and equity — words that are often said but rarely understood. To understand the meaning and value of true solidarity (which became a popular concept among 18th Century French Philosophers), one must first cultivate a strong sense of moral equity (which at its most basic foundation is an Aristotelian concept). Equity is the key to social change, professional flourishing and personal transformation — the key to evdemonia. It’s in embracing a sustainable concept of equity that solidarity in overcoming challenges can be achieved.

We invite each of you to work with us in connecting others to the people and resources they need to find balance and equity in their personal and professional lives. It may be a small deed — a call or text connecting a person to a new resource — or a significant level of mentoring and support. The important thing is to keep moving forward towards a brighter time, bringing others with you whenever the opportunity presents itself.

A Year In Review (2023)

Highlights of our 2023 efforts include the following:

  • Our 2023 Spring Symposium, Promethean Fire, was a great success.
  • We’ve incorporated several new pilot programs including a wonderful Weekend Retreat at Seven on Shelter for mentors and educators; for the benefit of those who were unable to attend we ran short daily podcasts for the duration of the retreat.
  • We moderated several panel discussions at a variety of local colleges throughout the year.
  • We hosted a virtual Empowerment Summit that, along with our Monthly Podcast, Pes Mou Empowerment Secrets continues to be available for free on our YouTube Channel
  • Our 7-Session Concierge Mentoring Program (value $1050), which has proven extremely successful over the past few years, was offered as a raffle prize for the 2023 Maria Callas Christmas Concert hosted at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (NYC).
  • Under the aegis of our Healthy Lifestyle programming we’ve lent our technical resources and support to the launch of the new Focus on Spirituality Mission (F.O.S.) — a free online Orthodox bereavement initiative designed to help others cope with stress and challenges of losing a loved one by providing a safe space for confidential discussion, support and resources. The 8-month pilot program will run every third Tuesday of the month beginning January 16th, 2024. (Click the link above for mission details and meeting link.) This initiative is being launched with the support of Make Meaning Workshop, Rose Hill Psychological Services, Scripture Unveiled, and additional private sponsorship.
  • We’ve sought out an increased number of articles and presentations prepared by up-and-coming young professionals. In doing this we hope to preserve the spirit and values of the young professional community, reflecting their needs, interests and perspectives in our featured readings and articles.

Below in “Events” are recaps about several events from our supporters at the Consulate General of Greece in New York, the Hellenic Film Society USA, the Hellenic Medical Society of New York, Capital Link and other organizations.

A Look Ahead (2024)

Always forward-thinking, our team has already planned a variety of activities for 2024 including our annual Holiday Mentoring Brunch @ Skinos NYC on January 6th and our 15th Annual Spring Symposium on May 18th. We hope you’ll join us.

We are here for you! The team at Philo4Thought specializes in helping our clients identify, manage and achieve their personal and professional potential to flourish in work and in life. As always, if you’d like to suggest a topic or activity, please email us at info@philo4thought.org or use the chat box at the bottom of the screen.

Celebrating Seasonal Traditions

  • Wishing everyone happy holidays. At this time we invite you to email us with your favorite holiday tradition!
  • Ours include bringing good cheer to students and professionals whose families are not nearby by sharing news of holiday events in November and December, checking in on them during the holidays and hosting a festive brunch in honor of the Epiphany (a.k.a, Three Kings Day, 12th Day, or Little Christmas). We of course also have the tradition of visiting Pi Bakerie for their authentic, just-like-mama’s portokalopita and vasilopita. We hope you’ll join us this year at Skinos! Click the link below to sign up!

Celebrate Traditions & Transitions

  • A shout-out to all those celebrating name days, birthdays, anniversaries, and special seasonal festivities.

HYPLife

Spring Digest 2023

EDITOR'S NOTE

WELCOME BACK!

Dear Readers,

Kalo Mina!

The spring season is a time of new life, renewal and fresh starts. It’s in this season that we look to recognize and empower the fine work of women, emerging professionals, and various organizations that support the young professional community. As we continue our individual journeys towards self-empowerment and mindful appreciation of self and others, it’s also important to take a moment to ensure that you’re having a positive impact on those around you. When others look to push you down or add burdens to your life, take it in stride and maintain your positive professional identity. Don’t let the negativity of others run you off the path to personal and professional fulfillment.

In the US, March is recognized as Women’s History Month and represents a time that professional women are meant to support one another, to elevate their juniors and to recognize greatness in one another.  Along these lines, we have a special honoree this month, Marianthi Vlachos, Founder and Owner of Hellenic Aesthetic in Astoria New York, whose work we celebrated on March 3rd with a special Certificate of Excellence issued by Philo4Thought’s Board of Directors.

Our January-June Podcasts features several helpful tips related to the theme Promethean Fire as it applies to empowerment of the following groups: mentors & educators, emerging young professionals, professional women, organizations seeking to support NextGen initiatives and unify the diaspora.

Information on Special Events including our Annual International Spring Symposium are available below.

We are here for you! The team at Philo4Thought specializes in helping young professionals set and manage their personal and professional goals to reach their potential and flourish in work and in life.

Have a question or topic you’d like addressed in a future video or newsletter? Please send your feedback to our team using the chat box at the bottom of the screen.

Relax and enjoy this issue of #HYPLife!
Please share with friends, family and colleagues!
Wishing you all an amazing Spring season!

MINDFULNESS TIPS

Top Tips: Lifestyle, Career & Balance

True and lasting transformation requires three things: Confidence, commitment and faith.

Mindful Lifestyle: What is Self-Empowerment?

    • Understand Your Goals. Knowing what you want and clearly envisioning the path needed to achieve that goal.
    • Reject the Negatives. Everyone has a negative person or experience in their life. It’s important not to sink to the level of the childish or negative colleague, acquaintance or relative. Consciously choose to embrace the positive and expel the negative.
    • Maintain a Professional Demeanor. To cultivate a sense of respect within yourself and among others it’s important to learn how to maintain a steady, calm-yet-candid demeanor. Again, do not sink to the level of your antagonists. Remember that you are an intelligent person with a lot to offer the world!

Mindful Career: How Do I Stop Tearing Others Down?

    • Become Aware of Your Process. If you tend to critique others, either overtly or with passive aggressive comments that tear others down rather than building them up, check yourself and retain what you’re about to say to the person in front of you.
    • Think of a Genuine Compliment that will Build a Person Up. Try to think of a positive compliment or point of communication — a simple statement you can make that is genuine and complimentary. Don’t gush on and on.
    • Practice Makes Perfect. The more you engage in positive and genuine communication the better you will get at it.

Mindful Balance: How Do I Cope with Anxiety from Negative Feedback?

    • Recognize that you are the only one who can give power and value to the words of another person. A negative or abusive person has NO POWER or VALUE to you if you don’t allow them to have it.
    • Understand the Source. Ever heard the expression that a person will gossip about others because they don’t want others to gossip about them? There’s a grain of truth to this. Most likely those who are sharing or critiquing your personal or professional choices has made quite a few bad ones themselves. Don’t put too much stock in what they’re saying.
    • Don’t Fan the Fire. Don’t repay negativity with more negativity. Rise above the situation and show that YOU are the better person. In the end other people will see this and you would have earned their respect.
    • Recognize What Triggers You and Be Prepared to Walk Away. Know what topics and actions trigger you. Know when to walk away from a person or situation rather than engaging in negative feedback or interactions that will cause your anxiety to build and make you freeze.

Helpful Resources

Take a workshop to explore an interest. (Free or low-cost courses are available online.)
  • FREE Assessments are available at Philo4Thought! Click Here.
  • Personal Development Courses.  Explore a new skill or hobby. Learning a language or new skill (cooking, gardening, etc.) can help to unlock your potential by taking your mind off the every day.
  • Earn a supplementary certificate to advance in your current or desired career path.
  • Meet with a reliable career coach when planning any type of transition (college-to-career, corporate to entrepreneurial, etc.).
  • Expand your horizons through positive and proactive networking.

SUMMARY: We’re raising funds to support the publication of this seminal work about The 5 Pillars of Sustainable Productivity & Flourishing” developed by Prof. Chris Salboudis throughout her 30 years of teaching the comprehensive works of Aristotle. The book, “A” is for “Aristotle” serves as a practical guidebook for setting order to work and life to allow for genuine human flourishing.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Since the late 1990s, Philo4Thought’s CEO, Prof. Chris Salboudis, launched a series of short instructional publications to benefit her students, protégées and clients. In keeping with the spirit of Hellenism instilled in her by her family and through her extensive training as a professor and life coach, Chris contends that understanding the fundamental building blocks provided by Aristotle is the means to unlocking true potential and flourishing in work and in life.

This publication, consisting of a basic introduction, five chapters on the 5 Pillars to Sustainable Productivity & Flourishing (in Work & Life) and a special illustration of Chris’ Philosophical Measures (an exclusive Life Balance Strategy offered to supporters of this dedicated fundraising initiative), will help individuals find their creative and pragmatic bearings for a healthier, happier outlook, lifestyle and/or career path that they find fulfilling.

HYPLife: Winter Digest 2023

HYPLife

Winter Digest 2023

EDITOR'S NOTE

WELCOME BACK!

Dear Readers,

Kalo Mina! Kali Xronia!

The winter season is full of holiday festivities as we cross the threshold from one year to the next. While most of us spend a lot of time carefully mapping out resolutions for the new year, many fall short of fulfilling them, perhaps because we do not leave enough time for revelation and awareness about ourselves and our community. Many rush from deadline to deadline or home to home in the name of the holiday season, often struggling with feelings of being overwhelmed or held up to unreasonable standards by family and friends that set a person up for failure even before the new year starts. Mindful appreciation of self and others, of little gifts we are granted, of opportunities and resources that are available to us, is pivotal to steady fulfillment and flourishing, which are the two things that make a life worth living.

In the US, January is recognized as National Mentoring Month and represents a time of connecting with our advisors and mentors — or perhaps just making time to make a personal inventory of our goals and accomplishments to make sure we’re on a path that makes us happy. In February we join in celebrating Black History Month, remembering the faith and solidarity that has connected the Greek and African American communities since the time of Archbishop Iakovos and Dr. Martin Luther King. Staying unified with a sense of dignity and clarity about the world, united in the celebration of what makes us beautiful and strong, is a wonderful way to remember the legacy crafted by our ancestors.

Our Winter Digest provides articles and helpful tips related to Lifestyle, Career and Balance. There are also several featured young professionals and upcoming events that are showcased in the pages below. We hope you’ll enjoy and make use of the information provided.

We are here for you! The team at Philo4Thought specializes in helping young professionals set and manage their personal and professional goals to reach their potential and flourish in work and in life.

Philo4Thought Annual Passport Membership Registration is now available. Members enjoy reduced registration to several events, access to our VIP Vault of exclusive advisory materials, 10% off our standard professional coaching rates, and 80%-85% off professional certification and personal development courses available through our affiliates at New Skills Academy. As always, our goal is to educate, inspire and empower our readers and viewers. We’re here for you!

MINDFULNESS TIPS

Top Tips: Lifestyle, Career & Balance

True and lasting transformation requires three things: Confidence, commitment and faith.

Mindful Lifestyle: How Do I Know I’m Making Good Choices?

    • Understand Yourself. Know what it is that you want and commit to it.
    • Trust Yourself. Have confidence in your personal process. You may not need the traditional path that others have in mind for you. Trust yourself to make the choices that are best for you.
  •
    • Have Faith in Yourself. Have faith that you have taking the time to map your way out and are now ready to collect the wisdom and experience you need to pave the way to the future you want.

Mindful Career: How Do I Stop Procrastinating?

    • Set attainable goals. Setting attainable goals for oneself is essential to ensuring success and progress. It’s great to think and dream big, but it’s important to recognize that big dreams are achieved with steady steps forward.
    • Map out the resources needed. Line up the resources you need for success. Sometimes it’s easy to collect them at once, other times one can only collect a few resources at a time. Don’t let ONE missing resource cause you to lose your steam! It’s ok to move forward with some of your key resources and pick the rest up along your journey to success!
  •
    • Be determined NOT to procrastinate! A healthy way to ensure that you move forward is to simply resist the urge to procrastinate. Set the small manageable goals and be determined not to procrastinate!
  •
    • Practice Makes Perfect. The more you engage in this three-step process the easier it is to leave your procrastinating tendency behind. After all, as the great Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence… is not an act, but a habit.”

Mindful Balance: How Do I Cope with Anxiety About Change?

    • Recognize change as a part of growth. Every moment is an opportunity to learn and grow as a person and as a professional. Changes at home, school or work can lead to increased productivity if you remain determined to learn from every moment.
    • Understand the source of the change. Getting to know the source and reasons for a major change can help you put matters into perspective and make transitions easier to manage.
  •
    • Understanding what you need to make a change positive. Some people become overwhelmed with the stress of change, whether major or minor, because they do not have the tools needed to cope with change.
  •
    • Admitting when you need help. The most important factor in coping with anxiety caused by change — or navigating the phases of a major change in a positive and productive manner — is seeking the proper guidance. Hiding from your anxiety (or denying it) serves no purpose. It takes a stronger person to admit that they need a hand overcoming an obstacle.
